Franz Singer (architect)

Franz Singer (born February 8, 1896 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary , † October 5, 1954 in Berlin ) was an Austrian architect and designer.

Life

After attending a children's drawing course from 1905 to 1906 at the Kunstgewerbeschule Vienna under the course instructor Alfred Roller , Franz Singer was taught by Felix Albrecht Harta from 1914 to 1915 . After his military service (1915–1917) he studied philosophy with Johannes Itten until 1919 . He then attended Johannes Itten's class at the Bauhaus in Weimar until 1923 .

The liaison with Friedl Dicker resulted in joint work and activities. In 1923 they founded the workshops of fine arts in Berlin and in 1925 the architectural office Singer & Dicker in Vienna-Alsergrund, Wasserburggasse 2.

In addition to his work as an architect in Vienna, Franz Singer worked as a consultant for John Lewis. He was unable to return to Austria from an assignment in England in 1938, as it had meanwhile been annexed to Nazi Germany. This is how he escaped the Holocaust .

The collaboration with Hans Biehl was followed by that with Hedy Schwarz-Abraham .

  • 1933: Stackable tubular steel armchair / chair V-type (tubular steel, cane wickerwork and with or without armrests) and was manufactured in a small edition in 1933
  • 1934: Nesting Wooden Chair (stackable plywood armchair / chair) and was made in 1934 in a small edition.
