Franz Solan Schäppi

Franz Solan Schäppi OFMCap (born July 16, 1901 in Zurich , † July 23, 1981 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss Capuchin and missiologist.

Life

Franz Solan Schäppi, baptized Johannes, was the son of Johannes Schäppi and his wife Sophie, b. Steinert.

He attended the Immensee high school from 1916 and joined the Capuchin Order in Lucerne on September 12, 1922; his temporary profession took place on September 18, 1923, the solemn profession on September 18, 1926. From 1923 to 1929 he studied theology in Stans , Sitten , Freiburg , Zug and Solothurn and was ordained a priest on September 7, 1929 ; then he was a student of missiology at the University of Münster and received his doctorate in theology on December 19, 1933 .

He taught as a lecturer in moral theology , temporarily also for church history and canon law , from 1934 to 1958 at the faculty of the Capuchins in Solothurn and was provincial minister of the Swiss Capuchins from 1945 to 1948 and from 1951 to 1954 , and from 1951 to 1959 definitor . As provincial minister, he particularly promoted house missions as well as special pastoral care for farmers and workers, and from June 15, 1947 to February 20, 1948 visited African missions, to which he paid special attention.

In 1958 he became Superior in Rigi-Kaltbad with the St. Michaels Chapel and on July 31, 1959 he was appointed General Definitor of the Capuchin Order in Rome , until he returned to Lucerne in July 1970. As Definitor General, he was repeatedly given the task of making canonical visits to provinces of the Order or of presiding over the provincial chapters .

Act

Franz Solan Schäppi also worked on the compilation of Essential Pastoral Care and was co-editor of the New Journal for Missiology . Through study visits to London and East Africa , he expanded his linguistic and mission science knowledge. The Wesemlink monastery in Lucerne owes its determination to the thorough renovation and new construction that began in 1953. He made great contributions to the establishment of the Capuchin Foundation Emaus near Bremgarten , which took place on April 30, 1955.

Honors

In January 1936 the Catholic theological faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster made him an honorary doctorate .
