Franz Ullmann (mountain master)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Anton Ullmann (born January 16, 1800 in Neudek ; † 1864 at Hirschenstand ) was a Bohemian union shift supervisor and mountain administrator . He is considered to be Neudek's last mountain master .

Life

Ullmann came from a long line of miners and was born as the son of the miner, geometer and kk branch tithe taker Kaspar Anton Ullmann (1767-1853) and his wife Eva Anna Johanna, née. Pöhner (1777–1851) was born in Neudek in the Ore Mountains . His grandfather was the mountain foreman, geometer and chemist Anton Jakob Ullmann (1732–1807).

In his function as new Bergmeister 1 von Neudek in the 1830s and 1840s, Ullmann made every possible effort to help up the ailing mining industry. In a letter dated February 10, 1841, he reported to the Imperial and Royal Mining Authority that tin mining had changed very much to the detriment and that the ores were no longer as productive as they were before. The mining industry can only survive if the price is in a favorable relationship to the production costs. The domestic tin , which contains many foreign components, is finding ever less demand because the more valuable Indonesian Bangka tin is cheaper to produce. According to Ullmann, the only way to increase mining would be to increase the import tariff.

Problems caused Ullmann more and more the increasingly strenuous and costly struggle with the water that drowned the deep burrows. In a report the mountain master complained: "The hermaphrodites were getting narrower, the waters more and more!". As a result of the low yields and the low price of tin, more and more mines were given up. Ullmann was deeply saddened to see that the fate of the shafts was sealed.

Ullmann, who was repeatedly drawn into his pits, had an accident in 1864 in the Hirschkopfzeche near Hirschenstand. His cane was found in a deep cavity filled with water . Since inquiries into his corpse turned out to be inconclusive, the popular tale went around that Ullmann is said to have sawed off the rungs of the ladder when he descended into the shaft in order not to get to the daylight. He was unable to overcome the decline in mining.
