Franz Wilhelm August Freiherr Göler von Ravensburg (born April 28, 1809 in Sulzfeld , † June 10, 1862 in Karlsruhe ) was a major general in Baden and a military writer .

Life

He was the son of Major Benjamin Göler von Ravensburg (1782–1834) and Amalie von Reck (1785–1853). In 1827 he became a lieutenant in the Baden artillery , where he rose to the rank of colonel and finally received a position as director of the grand ducal art institutions that corresponded to his inclination towards scientific and antiquarian research. He retired in 1859 with the rank of major general.

His publications were the result of many years of thorough research into Julius Caesar's warfare . In particular, the following should be mentioned: The battles at Dyrrhachium and Pharsalus in 48 BC. A war science and philological research (Karlsruhe 1854), Caesar's Gallic War in the years 58–53 BC. BC (Karlsruhe 1858) and civil war between Caesar and Pompejus in 50/49 BC. Chr. (Heidelberg 1861).

From 1839 to 1841 and from 1861 until his death, August Göler von Ravensburg was a member of the First Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly as a representative of the manorial nobility below the Murg .

Franz Wilhelm August Freiherr Göler von Ravensburg died on June 10, 1862 in Karlsruhe and was buried in the family cemetery of Freiherr Göler von Ravensburg in Sulzfeld (Baden) . After his death, his son Baron Ernst August Göler von Ravensburg published a second edition of his father's works. The title of this edition is: Caesar's Gallic War and parts of his civil war, together with appendices on Roman warfare and on Roman dates. Edited by Ernst August von Göler after the author's death.
