Franz Xaver Bovius

Franz Xaver Bovius (born Franz Xaver Joseph Ox * 19th March 1677 in Eichstätt ; † 18th July 1725 in Preith ) was in the diocese of Eichstaett active Catholic priests and manufacturer of sundials .

Life

Originally called ox, he latinized his family name in Bovius as a student from 1695/96. From 1688 to 1699 he attended the Jesuit college in Eichstätt. He was ordained a priest on March 6, 1700 in Eichstätter Cathedral. In 1709 he became vicar of choir in Herrieden in the upper bishopric. In 1711 he became a cooperator in Arberg , 1713 in Ornbau , 1714 in Stopfenheim and from 1718 to 1723 Frühmesser or parish curate in Pfahldorf . From October 1723 until his early death he was pastor in Preith . His gravestone is on the northern Preither church wall.

He was not only a priest, but also a manufacturer of sundials, the dials of which he etched himself on Solnhofen limestone . In 1711 he made a sundial for the Eichstatt clockmaker Wilhelm Köberle. A Bovius clock constructed in 1716 was in the museum on the Maxberg of the Solnhofer Aktien-Verein (since 2005: Fossil and Stone Printing Museum Gunzenhausen ). This clock belonged to the Eichstätter cathedral capitular Ferdinand Edmund Freiherr von Cloth. The Museum of Applied Art in Frankfurt am Main (made in 1721 for the later Vicar General Johann Raphael Hengel in Eichstätt ) and the Styrian State Museum in Graz have other Bovius sundials ; the latter, made in 1715, is dedicated to Ferdinand Karl Freiherr von Ow and his wife Anna Gertrud Magdalena.
