Life

Franz Xaver Gebauer was the son of a teacher and organist who gave him his first music lessons. After further training in Breslau, he first worked as an organist in Frankenstein in Silesia . In 1810 he went to Vienna, where he soon became known for his performances with the harmonica, as the jew's harp was then called. He also played the cello and gave music lessons. In 1816 he got a job as choirmaster at the Augustiner Hofpfarr-Kirche in Vienna . He was a founding member of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde and founded the concert series “Concerts spirituels” in 1819 together with his friend Ferdinand Piringer, which was intended to counter the modern zeitgeist. Classical symphonies, masses and oratorios were performed, including Beethoven's cantata “ Meeresstille und Glückige Fahrt” .

Several songs of Gebauer's compositions were printed. Other compositions with church music are said to have been handwritten in his estate.

Franz Xaver Gebauer died in Vienna in 1822 at the age of 38. Ferdinand Piringer succeeded him in the direction of the “Concerts spirituels”.
