Franz von Herberstorff

Franz von Herberstorff (* before 1515 ; † after 1560 ) was a member of the Styrian National Committee and mayor in Graz .

Life

Franz, also Franciscus, came from the old Styrian noble family of Herberstorffer . He was a son of Johannes von Herberstorff and his wife Ursula von Lindt, a daughter of Sigismund von Lindt and his first wife Margarethe von Khuenburg .

In his first marriage, Franz was married to Amalie von Waideck, daughter of Christoph von Waideck and his wife Lucia Voegler (Vögler). With her he had fourteen children - six sons and eight daughters.

After the death of his first wife, he entered into a second marriage on November 18, 1543 with the widow of Gabriel von Stübich. Elisabeth, a daughter of Johann von Herberstein and his wife Margarethe von Racknitz , was already heavily pregnant at the wedding and gave birth to their son Andreas seven days later. With his second "housewife", Franz von Herberstorff had a total of five sons, as can be read on his grave slab.

The ancestors of Franz von Herberstorff, at least his parents, had their burial place in the parish church of Sankt Georgen an der Stiefing . Breaking with this tradition, Franz von Herberstorff moved the burial place to the All Saints Church near his ancestral home. Apparently after the death of his second wife, he commissioned a stone grave relief on which he had some details of his family relationships and the names of his children carved.

The epitaph , which was built into the eastern outer wall in the rear right inner area of ​​the parish church, shows Franz von Herberstorff with his two wives as well as his sons and daughters kneeling in front of the crucified Christ.
