from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Franciscan Sisters of Aiterhofen - full name: Franciscan Sisters of the Penance OSF in Aiterhofen - are a Roman Catholic women's order or a so-called regulated third order ( Franciscan Third Order Congregation) according to episcopal law with a generalate and motherhouse in Aiterhofen in the St. Josef Monastery .

history

founding

In 1840 Angela Fraundorfer founded a religious association with 13 young women from Geltolfing and the surrounding area. Pastor Handwercher von Oberschneiding was their spiritual director. On April 26, 1846, King Ludwig I of Bavaria granted the women permission. In 1846–1848 they built a house near the parish church of Aiterhofen, in which they have been together since February 14, 1849 according to the rule of St. Francis of Assisi live. Since 1855 the sisters have been taking perpetual vows and forming a monastic community with a novitiate . The founders had the intention that the sisters should lead a life of penance in isolation from the world, combined with works of charity, in particular the education of poor illegitimate girls and the care of the poor and the sick.

Missionary activity

Following the calls of Pope Pius XI , the Congregation sent five sisters on April 26, 1935 (Sister Benigna Binder, Sister Maria Augustina Aubeck, Sister Maria Antonia Pfeilschifter, Sister Serafine Plotz and Sister Gertrudis Schonberger) Arrived in Brazil May, 1935 .
The first foundation took place with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (= Holy House of Mercy) on August 13, 1935 in Bariri ( State of São Paulo ) - a hospital in Bariri and an orphanage in Barretos were taken over.
In 1992 three Brazilian and one German sister were sent to the Bolivian lowlands . In the vicariate of Ñuflo de Chávez , they worked under the Bavarian Franciscan mission bishop (Antonio) Eduardo Bösl OFM for the Chiquitanos , mainly in pastoral care, schools and hospitals.

The religious community today
