Franz Sales Handwercher (born June 3, 1792 in Loitersdorf near Oberhausen an der Vils , Lower Bavaria ; † August 17, 1853 in Oberschneiding , Lower Bavaria) was a Catholic pastor who was known as a "blessing pastor " and "visionary".

Life

Handwercher was born on the remote Loitersdorf in the parish of Oberhausen an der Vils . After childhood on his parents' farm and attending grammar school in Straubing and the Electoral Baierischen grammar school in Passau , he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Landshut . Among other things, he studied with Johann Michael Sailer , the later Bishop of Regensburg , with whom he was in contact beyond his studies. In 1816 he received in Regensburg by Bishop George Michael Wittmann , the ordination .

He performed his pastoral care in Niederviehbach , Tegernbach (near Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm ), Hohenegglkofen (south of Landshut) and most recently in Oberschneiding .

His grave has been in the parish church of Oberschneiding since the 100th anniversary of his death (1953).

In 1822 Handwercher became pastor in Tegernbach. From 1827 to 1836 he was a pastor in the parish of Hohenegglkofen. There he had visions for the first time in the winter of 1830, which he wrote down. When Handwercher came to Oberschneiding on August 12th, 1836, the call of “blessing pastor” preceded him, saying that he had the ability to heal the sick through prayer and his blessing. Thanks to his charisma and personal piety, religious life flourished in the parish. It is narrated that up to 400 to 600 people took part in the solemn ministry at 6:00 a.m. every day, and that on Sundays and public holidays the church was attended by believers from 2:00 a.m. until late at night.

As a result of the great popularity of the church services, Handwercher had the parish church of the Assumption of Mary extended by two aisles . However, the pastor's construction activities were not limited to the parish church: after he had brought the Order of the Poor School Sisters to Oberschneiding and they had taken over the girls' school, he had a new school building built. The girls' school house stood in front of the church on Hauptstrasse, where there is now a church forecourt and the war memorial. It was demolished in November 1987.

In 1843 he founded the “Brotherhood of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of Mary”, which after only a few months had 10,000 members. Among them was Johann Birndorfer, who later became the holy brother of Konrad von Parzham . The reputation of Handwercher had got around in the whole diocese and beyond, and numerous believers from other dioceses, especially from the diocese of Passau and Austria , joined the brotherhood.

According to tradition, Handwercher had the gift of precognition and wrote down his predictions and visions in rhyme form. In December 1830 he reported to his former teacher, Bishop Johann Michael Sailer, about his "spiritual messages", as Handwercher called it.

Handwercher was the head of the “Oberschneidinger Reformbund”, an association of clergymen who wanted to renew religious life in the countryside and who wanted to educate the children of the parish to receive communion every day and to regularly confess.

In spite of a few other church offices, Handwercher was always most devoted to his calling as a pastor. He was only briefly professor at the Progymnasium of the royal college in Landshut (1819-1821), as a seminar rain in Regensburg he only worked for a few weeks (1838).

Others

The nickname "Sales" comes from Franz von Sales and indicates that Handwercher was not baptized after Francis of Assisi , as is usual in Bavaria , but after the Bishop of Geneva, canonized in 1665 (memorial day on January 24th).

In memory of his work in the parish, the central square in Oberschneiding, where the parish church is located, was named Pfarrer-Handwercher-Platz.
