The Frauenlob class was used by the German Navy in the 1960s to designate coast guard boats that were later reclassified as inland minesweepers.
history
The first eight boats of the Frauenlob class were put into service by the German Navy in 1966 as coast guard boats of class 362 and shortly afterwards reclassified as inland minesweepers (class 394A). Together with the two units of class 394B, a total of ten of these wooden boats were put into service between 1966 and 1969. These were initially subordinated to the 5th Mining Squadron (5th MSG) and, after its establishment in 1967, to the 7th MSG in Neustadt / Holstein .
The name of the type ship / boat class goes back to the Prussian war schooner Frauenlob financed by donations from German women . It sank in a typhoon off Yokohama on September 2, 1860. The second bearer of this name was the Kleine Kreuzer Frauenlob , which the Imperial Navy had put into service in 1903 and which was sunk during the Battle of the Skagerrak .
The boats of the Frauenlob class changed their identification several times, also due to the different tasks . As guard boats they had a W identification, as minesweepers an M identification. At times they also had a Y identifier, since at that time only ten harbor protection boats were planned in the German Navy and this contingent was covered by the Ariadne class boats .
In the years 1994 to 2002 the boats were withdrawn from active service by the German Navy. Initially some were taken over by the Estonian Navy , but have since been replaced there by other units.
