Freak Show (Podcast)

The Freak Show (short FS ; mobileMacs until July 11, 2013 ) is a podcast that has been appearing every two weeks since April 2008 and is moderated and produced by Tim Pritlove . In addition to Pritlove, Denis Ahrens, John-Paul "hukl" Bader (since episode 36), Ruotger "Roddi" Deecke (since episode 78), Clemens Schrimpe (since episode 102, previously guest in episode 96) and Katja "Letty" Dittrich ( since episode 174) to the team. Founding member was Max Winde, who left after episode 101. Guests are regularly invited, including Linus Neumann , Hans Heinrich Hübner and Pavel Mayer .

The podcast deals with current technical topics, for example new products from Apple or concepts such as Bitcoin and ZFS . According to his own account, “the joys and pains in dealing with technology, computers, networks, but also other cultural activities from playing guitar to brewing beer” are discussed in detail.

An episode is typically about four hours long. Since April 1, 2008, over two hundred episodes have appeared. The programs are streamed live . The audience can interact with the team via an associated slack channel (until spring 2016 IRC channel #freakshow on Freenode ). The listeners also create so-called program notes so that the content of the episodes can be searched as text.

The intro, outro and the music on hold were composed by Florian Erlbeck , who among other things also composed the music for Marienhof .

Live performances with recording of the podcast in front of an audience have so far taken place at the Chaos Communication Camp and the Chaos Communication Congress of the Chaos Computer Club .

According to Apple's Mac Life magazine , the Freak Show reaches around 45,000 listeners per episode, and it is one of the most popular technology podcasts on iTunes . The magazine t3n named the show in 2012 and 2014 as one of the best German-language tech podcasts. In a survey carried out by the German version of the technology magazine Wired on Twitter , the podcast came fourth among 254 respondents in 2015.

The podcast received media attention in April 2013 after the release of the song “Funktionale kaputt” , which criticized the introduction of throttled Internet connections. Among others, Die Welt , netzpolitik.org and Fritz Trackback reported . The proceeds of over 800  euros from the sale on iTunes, where the song reached number 25 in the charts, were donated to the digital society .
