Fred Schmidt (writer)

Fred Schmidt , actually Alfred Eduard Schmidt (born July 24, 1902 in Neumittelwalde , Groß Wartenberg district, Breslau administrative district; † probably September 21, 1957 in the Central Atlantic when the Pamir sank ), was a German naval officer , writer , translator , editor and teacher .

Life

So far, nothing is known about his origin and family circumstances. He was a captain on a long voyage (patent A6 from October 2, 1931) and a teacher at the Reichseefahrtschule Lübeck . He received his training on sailing school ships. As a sailor he drove u. a. eight months on the four-masted barque Peking and as an officer on various ships of the DDG "Hansa" and the HAPAG .

As far as can be proven, Schmidt began writing in 1934. All works were related to seafaring . In 1940 he also wrote a volume for the series of novels, the War Library of German Youth .

From 1954 onwards, Schmidt made his Captain Fred Schmidt Archive available to the authors of the novel booklet series SOS - Fate of German Ships . The whereabouts of the archive are unknown.

In 1957 Schmidt served as an additional first officer on the training ship Pamir and presumably died on September 21st when it sank near the Azores . On November 28, 1957, he was pronounced dead .
