history

Originally, Frederick consisted of two separate towns, Hazel and Gosnell, which were next to each other. Both cities were founded in 1902. Later, when the Blackwell , Enid , and Southern railroad lines came along, the two cities merged and called themselves Frederick . The son of a train driver who brought the first passenger train to Frederick gave the town its name.

The city was incorporated in March 1907 after more than 200 residents signed a petition. In 1962, after a long delay and lengthy correspondence, a promised flagpole finally arrived, which stood as a sign of the settlement of the conflict between the two original cities. It was set up on a granite base in Pioneer Park . In 1970 the Wichita Falls - and the Northwestern - Railroad came to Frederick. The railway line was extended to Altus , Mangum and later to the Oklahoma Panhandle . This line currently ends in Altus.

The first settler families settled in the northwest of the city ( the high ground ). The first dirt roads were laid in 1918. To facilitate the move to the perimeter of the city, 15 miles of sidewalk were moved from First Street to Fourteenth Street , seven blocks in all directions. An edict issued in 1907 forced every man between the ages of 21 and 50 to work on the road for four to eight days a year, or pay a payment of $ 4 per year to be used for maintenance.

The only source of water was at a well in the west of the city. There were no trees in the rest of the city. In 1907, a bond issue designed to relocate a water system, the water from the wells could be transported into the city. After its completion in 1910, this allowed the cultivation of plants, trees and grass.

In 1904 a fire destroyed part of the city. From 1910, the construction of larger houses began because the smaller apartments were stamped as old. After the water system was completed, more and more gardens were created.
