Frederico Carlos Hoehne

Frederico Carlos Hoehne (born February 1, 1882 in Juiz de Fora , Minas Gerais , Brazil , † March 16, 1959 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian botanist. The autodidact made a name for himself as a collector of herbarium material and as a coordinator of botanical gardens and worked in a leading position in the predecessor institutions of the Botanical Institute of São Paulo, which he headed from its foundation until his retirement. His official author name in the first descriptions of plants is " Hoehne ".

Life

Frederico Carlos Hoehne was born in 1882 to a German family of emigrants near the Brazilian city of Juiz de Fora. In 1907 he married Carla Augusta Frieda Kuhlmann, who was also of German descent. The marriage had four children. Inspired by his father's orchid collection , he began cultivating orchids as a child. After completing his school career in 1899, he trained himself to become an expert on orchids and other plants. In 1907 he got on the recommendation of the chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of his hometown to the post of head of gardeners in the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro. As part of this activity, he took part in scientific excursions to explore the Brazilian flora. From 1917 he lived in São Paulo , where he first cultivated medicinal plants in the service of a health authority and later set up a herbal department at the medically oriented Butantane Institute. From 1923 he worked in the botany department of the São Paulo Museum and from 1928 in the botanical department of an agricultural-biological institute, which later became the Botanical Institute of São Paulo, which he headed until his retirement in 1952. In 1929 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Göttingen . Hoehne died in 1959.

Hoehne left behind more than 600 scientific and technical-popular science articles. He devoted himself in particular to the research and description of the Brazilian flora and in his writings he advocated their use, but above all their protection.

Honors

Are named after him, the plant genera Hoehnea Epling from the family of mint (Lamiaceae), Hoehneella Ruschi from the family of orchids (Orchidaceae) and Hoehnephytum Cabrera of the family Asteraceae (Asteraceae), also the journal Hoehnea of the Botanical Institute of São Paulo.
