Privateer (magazine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freibeuter , subtitled quarterly magazine for culture and politics , was a left-wing magazine from the Wagenbach publishing house . The editions were published quarterly in paperback format, the issues were also available by subscription . Each issue had a main topic, to which about a quarter of the content was dedicated. A total of 80 issues appeared between 1979 and 1999.

history

The name followed on from Pier Paolo Pasolini's buccaneers' writings , which had recently been published in German by Wagenbach and which brought the publishing house, which was affected by repeated house searches, criminal trials and collectivization, an enormous economic success in the 1970s. This also made it possible to found the magazine. It was also understood as a reaction to the increasing narrowing of the thinking of the New Left in Germany:

“[It] had looked as if the left would only disintegrate into escapists, theory enemies, left-wielding post holders. In contrast, if a magazine wanted to have an encouraging and inciting effect, it not only had to bring together what is neatly separated from each other in German, but also had to look for arguments and cheerfulness outside of the German misery. "

At the end of the 1980s, the circulation was 6,000 - 8,000 copies, depending on the issue, and 5,000 copies shortly before it was discontinued. The editors were Klaus Wagenbach (No. 1979–1999), Barbara Herzbruch (1979–1991), Thomas Schmid (1979–1985), later Barbara Sichtermann (1981–1999) and Heinrich von Berenberg (1986–1999).
