The Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium in Oberhausen - Sterkrade is one of the two municipal high schools in the Oberhausen district of Sterkrade. The other of the two municipal high schools in Oberhausen-Sterkrade is the Sophie-Scholl-Gymnasium , which is only about 300 to 400 meters east of the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium.
history
The forerunners of the Freiherr vom Stein Gymnasium were the rectorate school with a humanistic orientation, founded in Sterkrader Klosterstrasse in 1890 and the equal rectorate school with secondary school instruction founded in 1900. With 82 students from these two schools, the school, initially called a Realgymnasium in the making with Latin as the first foreign language , started operations in a back building of the Steinbrink School on April 26, 1905.
On June 10, 1907, the foundation stone was laid for the new school building on Wilhelmstrasse, which was inaugurated on September 29, 1909 in the presence of District Administrator Emil von Wülfing .
In World War I, 70 students and two teachers fall. A memorial plaque in the school still reminds of this today.
At Easter 1920 the school was converted into a Reform Realgymnasium with French as the first foreign language. Belgian occupation troops confiscated the building during the occupation of the Ruhr and used the basement as a prison.
Due to the growing number of pupils, an extension on Wilhelmstrasse became necessary. In this train, the so-called sower entrance was created, named after the motif above the door, which was inaugurated on July 29, 1929.
In 1935, the school was converted into a high school for boys and the Realschule was abolished; from 1938 it was named Schlageterschule - Oberschule für Jungs , named after the militant activist Albert Leo Schlageter , who was worshiped during the Nazi era .
After several damage caused by the war, the school was closed completely after the summer vacation of 1943 and the lessons were relocated. But classes could already be resumed on October 15, 1945. The school was named Städtisches Neusprachliches Gymnasium . The first regular Abitur examination was carried out in 1949.
For the 50th anniversary of the school in 1955, the main portal was restored, and in the course of the celebrations, the words Deo, Musis, Patriae (God, Science, Fatherland) , which are still there today, were added.
On January 1, 1960, the school was renamed Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium and thus received the name of the statesman and reformer Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein . Coeducation has been in place since the 1977/78 school year .
Due to the development of the number of students, the school has been expanded several times:
- 1959 new gym
- 1977 Extension with special classrooms for biology, physics and chemistry classes
- 1980 new triple sports hall (renamed Günter-Stolz-Halle after the former sports teacher in 2000 )
- 1980 Pavilions to accommodate the middle school classes are built on the opposite side of Wilhelmstrasse
- 1990 more pavilions are built
- 1999 new upper level building on the opposite side of Wilhelmstrasse
