history

Time to close

The history of the school began in 1903. In that year the Preparand Institute, a Prussian teacher training institution, was founded in Weferlingen. Nineteen years later, the graduation ceremony of these preparations took place and the middle school took over the rooms.

In 1926, the municipal representative of Weferlingen decided to set up a “High School in Construction” and then in 1927/28 the “German High School in Construction” was opened with the approval of the government of the Weimar Republic . The first advanced class at that time consisted of 25 students. The number of students grew, and the extension began a year later and the first rooms were ready for occupancy in 1930. In 1929, 190 students were taught here. After the school was recognized as the "State German Oberschule" in 1930, the middle school was closed. The following year the first school leaving examination took place and at the suggestion of the school and on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of the great reformer and patriot, the Minister for Science, Art and Public Education named the institution Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule . The last specialist rooms and a drawing room were set up in 1934. A boarding school was set up in 1937 in the former New Castle, which is now the community kitchen, and the renovation was completed a year later.

At the end of the war in 1945, the school was initially closed. It became a military hospital and American occupation troops moved into the boarding school . Soviet troops arrived in July and, on the instructions of the Soviet military administration, classes began again in the fall. At the suggestion of the then senior student councilor Schulze, the name of the school was dropped in 1950 and it was now called "Landesheimschule". This state home school was subordinate to the state of Saxony-Anhalt . The former hotel on the Platz der Jugend was used as a student hostel in 1952/53, making pensions superfluous. In 1953 the library with 10,000 scientific volumes was handed over to the Martin Luther University of Halle and the newly formed district took over the school from the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Auditorium with organ

Thanks to the organization of Dr. Dreyer inherited the facility, the organ of the teachers' college that had been dissolved in Mühlhausen . The organ was in the auditorium, but was not in use and was sold to a Catholic church in Magdeburg in 1956 . With the proceeds, the auditorium was converted into a ballroom. In the same year, at the request of the teaching staff and the students, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary, it was allowed to use the name "Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule" again. The ceremony coincided with the 200th birthday and the 125th anniversary of the death of Freiherr vom Stein. Since Weferlingen is very close to the border with West Germany, no one previously wanted strangers in the restricted area. They called for the school to be closed and a fire was started in the boarding school. As a result, the last school-leaving exams were taken here in the spring of 1962 and the extended secondary school was closed. The students in grades 9-11 had to switch to secondary school in Haldensleben .

Time after the reopening

A polytechnic high school was founded on September 1st . There 595 studied in 18 classes from year 1–10. They occupied the rooms of the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule, the Planschule and the new school. This polytechnic high school carried on the name and in 1966 already 719 students were taught in 20 classes. On the 150th anniversary of the death of Baron Heinrich Friedrich von und zum Stein, a new oak was planted in 1981. The entire heating system was renewed in 1987/88 and the rooms and corridors renovated. In addition, work was completed with the renovation of the auditorium in 1990.

Time after the reunification

Student catchment area

At the end of the school year 1990/91 the polytechnic high school was closed and one year later the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium was opened on September 2nd . The reopening was celebrated in the auditorium. The mayor, the district administrator and the district government were present on this occasion. In 15 years in 1991, 342 grades 5-10 students were taught by 25 teachers. They were housed in the main building and in the planned school and the new school became the Weferlingen elementary school. Since there was only a 10th grade at this time and therefore too few students studied at the school, no 11th grade and therefore no meaningful course level could be set up in the following year. The students therefore moved from Weferlingen to Haldensleben. In 1993/94 458 students from 21 classes were taught by 30 teachers. The number of students was very high and there was no space to accommodate them. Then in August 1993 the first extension began, in which seven classrooms were set up. This new building was ready for occupancy in October. Another highlight in school history was the first school festival in 1993 and another one on the Middle Ages in 1996. On this occasion, 500 visitors were on the school premises and followed the spectacle. In 1995 the Abitur examination took place for the first time and the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium started the Aller project. High schools on the Aller, such as Verden, Celle and Gifhorn, worked together on this project. During this time a choir was formed, which has already recorded several CDs. A secret vote by the district council of the Ohrekreis decided on June 26, 1996 to merge the grammar schools in Weferlingen and Oebisfelde . The main location was Weferlingen, Oebisfelde the branch. In the 2004/2005 school year, the school got another system building due to the growing number of students. It was moved from Dahlenwarsleben to Weferlingen. In the meantime, the Oebisfelde branch has been closed and further renovation work on the listed building was completed in 2008. The old gymnasium was converted into a multi-purpose building in the 2007/2008 school year. In the summer of 2008, work on the building, which is also a listed building, was completed. This will be used from the 2008/2009 school year. There is an art and a work room, a large room for eating and for larger events.
