The Friedeburger Tief is a body of water in the communities Friedeburg ( Wittmund district ) and Sande and Zetel in the Friesland district in northwest Lower Saxony .

course

The deep has no source in the traditional sense, but is formed from the confluence of several drainage ditches (regionally called Schloot ) southwest of the Karl-Georgs-Forst near Hopels in the East Frisian community Friedeburg. It flows first in a north-easterly, later in an easterly direction towards the Jade Bay . The center of the eponymous place Friedeburg is passed south, at the level of the former Friedeburg Castle .

On its way to the east, it receives several tributaries on the left and right. A special feature of the Emden Tief as a left tributary is that its main catchment area is north of the (higher) Ems-Jade Canal , which is why the canal has to be crossed by a culvert . The Friedeburger Tief flows into the municipality of Zeteler with the Neustädter Tief to the Ellenserdammer Tief and is drained by the Petershörn pumping station into the Dangaster Tief and further into the Jade Bay. The Friedeburger Tief is thus the only watercourse in East Frisia that does not flow into East Frisia.

history

The mouth of the Friedeburg Deep was - after several expansions of the Jade Bay by storm surges in the late Middle Ages - until the early 17th century, only a little west of the town of Friedeburg: Ships could reach the North Sea from there as well as from Neustadtgödens . In 1596, Count Johann XVI. From Oldenburg, however, the plan to shorten the dike line again and at the same time to reunite the northern and southern parts of the Oldenburg dominated area by land. His successor Count Anton Günther finally put this plan into practice with the construction of the Ellenser Dam in 1615 - despite East Frisian protests. After that, Friedeburg and Neustadtgödens were again cut off from direct access to the lake by a new sewer built on the Oldenburg area .

Protection status

The Friedeburg Deep is located below Friedeburg in the FFH area “Teichfledermaus-Habitat im Raum Wilhelmshaven” and in the landscape protection areaTeichfledermausgewässer ”.
