Friedel "Schimmel" Meyer (born October 6, 1919 in Osnabrück , † December 25, 2001 in Gelsenkirchen-Horst ) was a German football player who was twice a Gaumeister with VfL Osnabrück and took part in the final round of the German championship three times .

Career

Friedel Meyer, called “Schimmel” from his youth because of his light hair, came from the Osnabrück district of Schinkel and was active at SC Rapid, which merged with VfL in 1938. In attack, the young left winger played alongside center forward Addi Vetter in VfL's starting line-up, with Heinz Flotho in goal. As champions of the Lower Saxony Gauliga , the Osnabrückers took part in the finals of the German championship twice during this time, namely in 1939 and 1940 , under coach Walter Hollstein .

On November 19, 1939 Meyer was - after cousin and guest player Herbert Weigel from Planitzer SC had equalized twice - scorer of the winning goal in the 3-2 win against the reigning German champions FC Schalke 04 in the second round of the Tschammer Cup ; it was the first "big" game on the newly built Bremen bridge . In the round of 16, however, the Lilaweiß were eliminated 4-0 at the later finalists SV Waldhof Mannheim .

After the war , the game was resumed under the name of 1. FSV Osnabrück with some of the players from the pre-war team - including Meyer, Vetter and Flotho, who had come home with Schalke 04. Coach Kurt Schmidt and his successor Herbert Widmayer built a new team around Meyer, who now played in the middle position , as well as Erich Gleixner and Karl-Heinz Gehmlich , which was successful in the major league with the big clubs Hamburger SV , FC St. Pauli , Werder Bremen , Eintracht Braunschweig and Hannover 96 could keep up. After fifth place in 1948, he came third twice and in 1950 he qualified again for the championship finals .

Meyer then moved for personal reasons to Eintracht Braunschweig, and a year later he followed his friend Heinz Flotho, who like Meyer was from Schinkel, to Gelsenkirchen for STV Horst-Emscher , where he was active for another three years until 1954th After he had left the league , Meyer worked for a few years as a coach of amateur and youth teams in the Gelsenkirchen area before he completely renounced football at the end of the 1960s.
