Kalksburg cemetery
The cemetery Kalksburg is a cemetery in the 23rd Viennese district Liesing .
location
The Kalksburg cemetery is located in the southwestern part of the Liesing district in the Kalksburg district at Zemlinskygasse 26. The cemetery has a triangular shape and is located in the northeast of the district in a largely undeveloped area. To the north of the cemetery are the Neuberg vineyards, to the south and west of which there are unspoilt areas. The Kalksburg cemetery covers an area of 7,658 square meters and houses 810 grave sites. This makes it one of the smallest cemeteries in Vienna.
history
Kalksburg was raised to a local chaplaincy in 1783, despite the small number of inhabitants , and parished out by Atzgersdorf . In 1805 Kalksburg was raised to a parish. Landowner Franz von Mack had a local cemetery built at the entrance to the Gütenbachtal, where he had a family crypt built in 1793. However, the cemetery had to be closed on December 19, 1893 for sanitary reasons. The establishment of a new cemetery on the border with Rodaun was confirmed by the Ministry of the Interior in 1892.
According to a municipal council resolution in 1965, no new or fallen graves could be given at the Kalksburg cemetery or at other Viennese cemeteries . The cemeteries were to be closed in 1975. After the lock-up period was extended by ten years in 1975, a referendum conducted in 1980 overturned the law. The blocking decision was lifted by the Vienna City Council in 1980.
As a result, the funeral hall was rebuilt in 1984/85 and expanded with an extension. The interior was redesigned according to plans by the architect Erich Boltenstern . In 1985 and 1986, the cemetery administration also erected a chancellery building and a new boundary wall.
