Construction work began on May 7, 1884. The architect of the building was Erwin Theodor Döbner , who also directed the work. The cemetery chapel was completed on September 9, 1885; the inauguration took place on October 2, 1885 in the presence of the church council of the Evangelical regional church of Saxony-Meiningen and representatives of the city authorities. In 1887 the chapel was supplemented with a coffin lowering device from Meiningen's "Eichhorn company". The construction costs totaled 29,300 Reichsmarks. On February 23, 1945, the cemetery chapel was completely destroyed in a bomb attack . Preserved natural stones were used in the reconstruction of the crematorium and celebration hall that was destroyed on the same day .

Building

The cemetery chapel was located in the southwest part of the cemetery and was a neo-Gothic building made of limestone . It was 20 meters long and 13 meters wide. On the gable sides there was a rose window with glass paintings by the company “Burkhardt and Son” from Munich . The main entrance with a Gothic skylight was on the west side, with a small roof turret on the gable . Three pointed arch windows with colored lead glazing were installed on each of the two long sides. Inside on the east side there was a stone altar with an iron grille and two wrought iron candelabra , behind which hung a painting in the altar niche. On the west side, next to the main entrance, there was a sculpture donated by Duke George II , which depicted the Archangel Michael fighting with Satan. There were side entrance doors on the north and south sides of the sanctuary:
