The Friedrich-Engels-Gymnasium in the Berlin district of Reinickendorf is a grammar school founded in 1905 with currently around 971 students, near the White City and the Breitkopf Basin . The main building is listed as a monument.

history

The main building was completed in 1905 in the form of the neo-renaissance. When it was founded on April 6, 1905, the school was named Höhere Gemeinde-Knabenschule , and in 1911 it was recognized as a Reform Realgymnasium. Since 1937 as a high school for boys called, led since 1938 to at the National Socialists welcome name of the fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen . The school has borne the name of the co-founder of Marxism Friedrich Engels since November 28, 1945, the 125th birthday of its namesake. In 1949 the school building was restored after the war damage. As part of the West Berlin school reform of 1951, it has also been called the 1st OWZ ( Oberschule Wissenschaftlicher Zweig ) in Berlin-Reinickendorf since September 3, 1951 . From 1952, the school is divided into a modern language and a mathematical and scientific course .

Technical focus

Spanish

Spanish was already being taught in the 1930s and continued to be taught in a study group from 1959/60 onwards by an exchange teacher who had returned from Chile .

The model project German-Spanish bilingual train with Spanish as a second foreign language was started in 1991, which was expanded into a standard offer in 1994. In the meantime, the students are learning the Spanish language, which is offered from grade five and from grade seven. Another special feature is the German-Spanish bilingual train from class five. There are more Spanish lessons here so that later, from the eighth grade, the subject history and from the ninth grade geography can be taught in Spanish.

Sports

Since the school year 2009/10, a 7th grade has been offered at the Friedrich-Engels-Gymnasium as a sport-oriented class. The first foreign language must be English, the second foreign language can be Spanish or French. The aim is to reconcile performance-oriented sport and school education. The intermediate school leaving certificate (MSA) and the Abitur are offered as official school leaving certificates for the State of Berlin. From the 7th to the 10th school year, sports are offered two additional sports lessons per week. The content of these sports lessons is coordinated by professionally qualified teachers in close coordination with the club's trainers. School support is provided through support measures that may be individually agreed with the school, parents and associations.

Biology in english

Since the 2007/08 school year, one of the 7th grades at the Friedrich-Engels-Gymnasium has had increased English lessons. This means: In addition to the four hours of regular English lessons per week, the students have an additional hour that is used to impart initial biological content in English. At the same time, skills that are of great importance for bilingual biology lessons in grades 8–10 are strengthened, such as: B. free speaking. In grades 8–10, intensified biology lessons are given (one hour more biology each time than in the parallel classes). With a few subject-related exceptions, the content is taught in English.

Career orientation

The school participates in the Berlin program for in-depth professional orientation (BvBO) and offers its students support in professional orientation and career choice.

Extracurricular activities

The extracurricular activities include the annual memorial tour, which is particularly dedicated to recent German history. Places of the Nazi dictatorship and the Holocaust are visited. The students also get to know neighboring countries, especially the Eastern European ones. In addition, every year skiing, as well as trips to Spain and Latin America are undertaken. Every year four delegates from the school take part in the "Model European Parliament" (MEP) simulation game. During a project week of the 9th grade, the school holds a school parliament on European issues in order to select the participating students for the MEP. Furthermore, the film music project was founded in 2013, which should enable schoolchildren to come into contact with film music. 80 pupils of different age groups are currently participating in the project.
