Friedrich Anton Schneider

Friedrich Anton Schneider (born July 13, 1831 in Zeitz , Province of Saxony , † May 30, 1890 in Breslau ) was a German zoologist and university professor . He observed cell division in flatworms .

Life

Schneider studied mathematics and natural sciences at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . Attracted more and more to zoology, he moved to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin in 1851 . With a doctorate in Johannes Peter Müller doctorate he 1854 Dr. phil. They survived a shipwreck on a trip to Norway together . In 1856/57 Schneider visited Naples and Messina . After completing his habilitation in 1859 and becoming a private lecturer , he became curator of the Zoological Museum at Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität . There he devoted himself to the nematode collections . With Nathanael Pringsheim he researched small marine animals near Heligoland .

In 1869 he followed Rudolf Leuckart to the chair at the Hessian Ludwig University . In the Franco-Prussian War he took care of the wounded.

In 1874 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

For the academic year 1880/81 he was elected rector of the University of Giessen.

In 1881 he followed the call of the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University . In 1886/87 he was also its rector. In his rector's speech on October 15, 1886, he dealt with Georges Cuvier . He married in 1886 and died four years later at the age of 59.

He was the founder and editor of the Zoological Papers .
