Friedrich Arnold (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Arnold , actually Jean Frédéric Arnold (born June 28, 1815 in Strasbourg- Krautenau (Strasbourg- Krutenau ), † March 18, 1854 ibid), was a French painter and draftsman of German origin.

family

Johann Friedrich Arnold was born as a French citizen in Strasbourg, Alsace; the official name of his birth certificate was Jean Frédéric Arnold . Ancestors had (presumably) moved from Baden to Strasbourg. His parents were the Strasbourg-born architect Jaques Frédéric (Jakob Friedrich) Arnold (1786–1847), and his wife Cathérine Elisabet (Katharina Elisabeth), née Lichtenberger (* 1785). The paternal grandfather was also called Jaques Frédéric Arnold (1762–1823) and was also an architect, the mother's father was the high school professor Jean Frédéric (Johann Friedrich) Lichtenberger (* 1844).

Life

Arnold's early mention can be found in a sketchbook by the painter Eugen von Guérard , who met him in Rome in 1838 and drew him. It is assumed that a subsequent training as an architect with Georg Moller in Darmstadt ; a drawing Vue de Darmstadt, prize au Belvédère du Théatre from 1841 at least confirms the stay in the Hessian city. From 1842 to 1843 his name is listed as a student of the landscape class under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer in the student list of the Düsseldorf Art Academy , but as an architectural painter . Presumably his acquaintance with Eugen von Guérard had inspired Arnold to study in Düsseldorf. He accompanied him in May 1842 on a study trip to Heisterbach monastery near Königswinter and in August of the same year to Xanten . Arnold's name appears again with the exact date in two drawings in a sketchbook by Guérards. In 1845 Arnold returned to Strasbourg and married Julie Lehmann from Riquewihr in Alsace . Works with place names and the year of origin, exhibited in the "Société des amis des arts de Strasbourg" refer to stays in Darmstadt and Xanten as well as in Bacharach and in the Baden communities of Lautenbach , Gengenbach and Haslach in the northern Black Forest . The artist died at the age of only 38 in his home at 10 Rue Neuve Quai des Bateliers, in Strasbourg.
