Friedrich August Arnold

Friedrich August Arnold (* 16th November 1812 in Halle (Saale) , † 18 August 1869 ibid ) was a German teacher and Orientalist . He was a professor of oriental languages at the University of Halle .

Life

Arnold studied Oriental Studies and Sanskrit at the University of Halle with Wilhelm Gesenius and Emil Rödiger . He was able to continue and finish his studies at Berlin University . Among his professors in Berlin were Franz Ferdinand Benary and Franz Bopp .

In 1839 he received a position as senior teacher at the Latina of the Francke Foundations in Halle and in 1842 as a private lecturer at the University of Halle. He later became an associate professor of oriental languages ​​and literature at the University of Halle. One of his students at the university was the future theologian and orientalist Adalbert Merx . Arnold was one of the founders of the German Oriental Society in 1845 and was a secretary until his death .

Of his more important works, Septem Moallakât appeared in 1850 . Carmina antiquissima Arabum with critical comments and in 1853 Chrestomathia arabica , which he published as editor with an extensive glossary . The outline of the Hebrew theory of forms for use in high schools and universities appeared in 1867. In two school programs of 1865 and 1866 it provided a collection and illumination of all passages in the Bible and Josephus which refer to the topography of Jerusalem . Arnold was also co-author of the Real Encyclopedia for Protestant Theology and Church and the magazine of the German Oriental Society .

Friedrich August Arnold died on August 18, 1869 at the age of 56 in his native Halle. He was a member of the Masonic lodge to the three swords in the Orient of Halle.
