Brühl came from the old Saxon-Thuringian noble family von Brühl with ancestral home on Gangloffsommern in Thuringia, which had gained power and influence in Saxony primarily through his grandfather, Count Heinrich von Brühl . As a result of the Seven Years' War, the family-owned Pförten estate came into Prussian territory, but remained in the family's possession and established the right to a hereditary seat in the manor house.

Brühl was the son of the landlord and writer Alois Friedrich Graf von Brühl (1738–1793) and his third wife Josefa Christiana Anna Countess Schaffgotsch (1764–1846). His first marriage was to Augusta Frantiska, Countess von Sternberg-Manderscheid (1793–1820), with whom he had three children:

  • Friedrich Stephan (1819–1893) ⚭ July 28, 1846 Paula Countess von Spee (* June 13, 1826; † May 31, 1889)
  • Franziska (* July 13, 1818; † November 25, 1844) ⚭ February 26, 1840 August Wilhelm Graf von Spee (* April 18, 1813; † August 23, 1882) (brother of Paula)
  • Christine (* March 28, 1817; October 23, 1902) ⚭ July 11, 1839 Erwein Graf von Schönborn (* May 17, 1812 - January 12, 1881) (parents of Franziskus von Paula Schönborn )

In his second marriage he married Elisabeth von Kerpen zu Illingen (* October 4, 1786, † January 21, 1865). This marriage remained childless.
