Friedrich Bartels (politician)

Friedrich Bartels (born March 28, 1871 in Loitz , † November 11, 1931 in Berlin ) was a German trade unionist and social democratic politician. Most recently he was president of the Prussian state parliament .

Bartels came from a family of cottagers in Pomerania and trained as a painter after school . Until 1904 Bartels worked as a painter journeyman .

His journeyman migration took him to Hamburg where a strike prompted him to join the free trade unions . As early as 1892 he was an honorary party and trade union functionary in Hamburg. From 1904 Bartels worked full-time for the painters' association, most recently as an employed Gauleiter for Hamburg. Between 1906 and 1913 he was district party secretary of the SPD for Schleswig-Holstein , based in Altona . He was also the editor of the monthly party newspaper "Schleswig-Holsteinische Landpost". Between 1904 and 1913 he was also a member of the Hamburg parliament .

From 1913 to 1919 Bartels worked as a party secretary in the central SPD party executive in Berlin . From 1919 until his death he was a cashier on the board of the SPD. From 1921 Bartels was a member of the main board of the workers' youth organizations.

From 1919 Bartels was a member first of the constituent Prussian state assembly and then until his death of the Prussian state parliament. Between 1925 and 1931 he was President of the Landtag.

Bartels is buried in the socialist cemetery .
