Friedrich Christian Beuther (born April 22, 1777 in Kleeburg in what is now Alsace , near Weißenburg, French Wissembourg ; † April 21, 1856 in Kassel ) was a German theater painter.

Life

Beuther was initially a bookseller's apprentice in Frankfurt am Main . From 1794 he was on the road as an actor . He was also a court actor in Offenbach am Main . Beuther had a number of relatively short positions that led him to a. Darmstadt , possibly Amsterdam , Wiesbaden , Bamberg and Würzburg . In 1815, Goethe engaged Beuther at the court theater as a stage painter in Weimar . Goethe, who actually wanted to hire Georg Fuentes (actually Giorgio Fuentes) from Frankfurt am Main, was apparently very satisfied with Beuther's work, which led to his commitment. Fuentes was the one who trained Beuther to be a stage painter. His motifs of stage painting, which were influenced by classicism and related to architecture, remained connected throughout his life. But Beuther only stayed in Weimar until 1818. This in turn was due to the termination of the theater management by Goethe, which was brought about by an intrigue of the court actress Karoline Jagemann . He then went to the Braunschweigische Hoftheater from 1818 to 1823 and then worked as a freelance painter for various theaters such as Kassel and Weimar.

In Weimar he designed his most important decorations, e.g. B. to the Magic Flute , to Titus , Proserpina and Epimenides. From there he also worked for Leipzig at the same time .

One of his colleagues in Braunschweig was Carl Wilhelm Holdermann , who incidentally also made decorations through Goethe's mediation. At times, Beuther and Holdermann were working in Weimar at the same time. Beuther was also Holdermann's teacher.

Beuther wrote u. a. a book about linear perspective. This work, in turn, was to play a role in a letter from Friedrich von Müller dated February 27, 1818. Von Müller wrote: “7 3/4 in the evening I picked up Julie at Goethe's. At first we were all alone with the old man [Goethe (MT)] and Ottilie, and he was very lovely. Julie presented her old drawing books, which he criticized in the most snappy manner. It is forbidden, even outrageous, to do so many beautiful things without having a clue about them. She should study perspective with Beuther. ” Julie von Egloffstein passed this on in a letter to her mother dated March 13, 1818. Accordingly, it is "only two inches wide from the true path and can only get there by knowing the perspective."
