Friedrich Biermann (entrepreneur)
Friedrich Ludwig Biermann (born December 1, 1837 in Kassel ; † June 23, 1904 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German entrepreneur who established himself as a cigar manufacturer in Bremen .
biography
Biermann was the son of a businessman. He learned in his uncle's soap and stearin factory in Rotenburg an der Fulda . In 1856 he became an employee of the J. S. Cohn company in Bremen. Here he got to know the cigar dealer Leopold Engelhardt and became his partner . In 1863 this company founded a cigar factory in Verden , which from 1864 under Leop. Engelhardt & Biermann operated . The factory expanded in 1867 with branches in Westphalia . The company was able to benefit from army deliveries. In 1882 further factories were added in southern Germany. When Engelhardt left in 1884, the company became a family business. It gained international importance and sold its products in Great Britain, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Portugal, Switzerland, South Africa and the German colonies . The company owned around 70 individual businesses in Germany.
Friedrich Biermann was chairman of the tobacco trade association and was awarded the honorary title of (royal Prussian ) commercial councilor . He was married to Berta Biermann, who, like their son Leopold, was a patron of the Kunsthalle Bremen .
Biermann died on a trip in Frankfurt am Main and was buried in the family funeral in the Riensberg cemetery in Bremen.
