Life

Origin and family environment

Friedrich Carl Gottlob von Kleist came from the line of Muttrin women of his ancient noble family, who came from Pomerania and was widespread in Prussia. He was the second son of Friedrich Carl Leopold von Kleist (1731–1799), captain and master on Kahren and Kappatz.

Military career

In accordance with the tradition of the time, Friedrich Carl Gottlob, as the second son who was not entitled to inheritance, chose the profession of soldier. He became a cavalryman and on May 8, 1788 ensign in the Dragoon Regiment "von Bosse" . On November 3, 1790 he was promoted to lieutenant and on March 14, 1799 to prime lieutenant and used as general adjutant . After the outbreak of the war against Napoleon , he took part in the fighting in Silesia . He distinguished himself particularly in the battles around Schweidnitz and was promoted to staff assistant master on February 10, 1807 , after he was wounded in a battle near Waldenburg. His commander, Lieutenant General Graf von Götzen, had given King Friedrich Wilhelm III. reported in a report dated February 14, 1807: “Through a reconnaissance against Schweidnitz we know that the enemy, about 7,000 men, is strongly entrenched. During this reconnaissance (February 8, 1807) 80 prisoners were brought in. This happened on the retreat. The enemy cavalry, around 250 horses, pursued Rittmeister von Stössel, who had only 80 horses. The very good Lieutenant von Kleist attacked with his train. Now that everything from the enemy was thrown at him, the other two squads opened up and fired at the enemy. The enemy turned back and was pursued so vigorously that he could not sit down again and, besides the prisoners, had 20-30 dead and wounded. We didn't lose a man. Lieutenant Kleist was injured. "

On October 10, 1807, Count von Götzen again reported to the king: “Rittmeister von Kleist made a special mark on the Blue Satchel (February 8), where he was injured. With excellent bravura he has a lot of service knowledge, application and an excellent moral character. For him I would sincerely ask for the VO ”. The king then granted Kleist the order Pour le Mérite on December 17, 1807.

After the end of the war, he first served in the inactive Silesian Cavalry and, from February 18, 1809, squadron chief in the new 2nd Silesian Hussar Regiment . On October 17, 1811, he was dismissed as a major with an annual pension of 300 Reichsthalers.

Together with his brother, Kleist had owned the paternal estates of Kahren and Koppatz-Antheil in the Cottbus district since 1772 . Since September 13, 1808, he was married to Nanerte Klingmann in childless marriage.
