Friedrich Christian Ernestus Bünsow (born June 10, 1824 in Kiel , † September 7, 1897 in Timrå ) was a Swedish businessman and patron .

Life

Friedrich Bünsow came from the Schleswig-Holstein branch of the Bünsow family , which had developed into a well-known family of artists there. His father was the Kiel painter Joachim Johann Friedrich Bünsow (1789–1873). After Bünsow had worked for the bookseller Adolf Bonnier in Stockholm until 1846 , he visited his uncle HF Postel in Sundsvall , who was a timber dealer and was in a conflict with Dutch timber importers. Since Bünsow was able to mediate successfully in this conflict, he was employed by his uncle. When he died a year later, the whole company fell into his possession. As a far-sighted businessman, he began to acquire vast forests in Jämtland and Medelpad . He later expanded his empire further and built a steam sawmill that soon became one of the largest. Which now run as a joint-stock enterprises had in 1889 a share capital of 19,600,000 SEK and owned forests totaling 300,000 hectares. At his death he was the second richest Swede after Alfred Nobel with an estate value of 420 million kroner.

Bünsow participated intensively in the urban life of Sundsvall, was active in urban politics and financially supported various cultural institutions; he became known as one of the “sawmill cartridges”, not least after the great fire in Sundsvall in 1888. Various museums could be set up with his money. The Department of Zoology at Uppsala University was also supported with donations. Bünsow-Land on Spitsbergen was named in honor of Friedrich Christian Ernestus Bünsow, as he had significantly supported Gerard Jakob De Geer's polar expedition in 1896.

Bünsow married Allona Krautmeijer in 1852. The Swedish diplomat Robert Bünsow was his son and heir. Friedrich Bünsow was buried on the Norra begravningsplatsen .
