Friedrich Demmer (singer, 1785)

Friedrich Demmer (* 1785 in Berlin ; † April 15, 1838 in Mariahilf in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer (tenor), actor and director and possibly the first Florestan in Beethoven's opera Fidelio .

Life

Friedrich Demmer was a son of Carl Demmer , who worked at the Theater an der Wien from 1804 . Already in 1807/08 a “Mr. Demmer, Sohn “- most likely Friedrich Demmer - to the ensemble of the Theater an der Wien. On May 16, 1814, “Hr. Fr. Demmer ”as Anton in August Wilhelm Iffland's play Die Jäger in the kk Hoftheater.

In the Vienna artist directory of Franz Heinrich Böckh in 1821 he is listed as follows: “Demmer Fridrich [!], Singer in the kk privil. Theater an der Wien. In the theater building at No. 26. “In August 1822, when Count Ferdinand Pálffy von Erdőd merged the Theater an der Wien with the Kärntnertor Theater , Friedrich Demmer and Ignaz von Seyfried formed the music committee of both theaters.

In December 1824, the actor Carl Friedrich Müller published a musical note for the New Years , “ dedicated to his esteemed friend Mr. Friedrich Demmer, director of the kk priv. Theater an der Wien”, which also contains a work by Ludwig van Beethoven : the waltz Es -Dur WoO 84, written on November 21, 1824.

Demmer also worked as a director at the theater in later years. From September 1829 to 1834 he worked as a singer and then until his death as chief director of the kk Hofoperntheater am Kärntnertor .

On April 15, 1838, “Mr. Friedrich Demmer, director in the kk Hoftheater next to the Kärntnerthor, aged 52, to Mariahülf no. 74, on lung addiction ”. In a short obituary, Ignaz Franz Castelli wrote : “Hr. Demmer was a capable actor, a valiant musician and capellmeister, an exemplary director and - a good man. "

In retrospect, Ferdinand von Seyfried described him as a “universal genius”.
