Friedrich Karl August Dewischeit (born March 5, 1805 in Königsberg i. Pr. , † August 27, 1884 in Gumbinnen ) was a German high school teacher and poet in Masuria.

Life

His father was the City Police Commissioner of Königsberg Johann Jakob Dewischeit. His mother was Katharine Wilhelmine Gersbach. Dewischeit attended the Collegium Fridericianum in Königsberg and studied from 1824 first law, then classical philology and German at the Albertus University in Königsberg . From 1829 to 1845 he was a teacher at the Royal Lyck High School , from 1845 to 1854 director of the Progymnasium in Hohenstein and from 1854 to 1876 high school professor at the Friedrichsschule Gumbinnen . He was married to Ida born in 1832. Rosenheyn, a daughter of Johann Samuel Rosenheyn , high school professor and honorary citizen of Lyck. In 1824 he became a member of the Masurian Association in Königsberg . He was the second member of the Corps Masovia .

Dewischeit was poetic and musical. The beauty of the Masurian landscape prompted him to compose and set five Masurian songs, among other things; the most famous was Wild floods the lake , which was originally called Des Masuren Wanderlied ( Masurenlied ). It became the national anthem of Masuria. Dewischeit himself reported on its creation. Dewischeit's pedagogical and scientific treatises appeared in the Prussian provincial papers and in the annual reports of the high schools in Lyck, Hohenstein and Gumbinnen. Dewischeit promoted the sport everywhere and was himself an excellent gymnast, swimmer, skater, fencer, hunter and marksman. In his house there were regular singing evenings and concerts, which enjoyed a high reputation and to which artists from far away also came.

In 1937, two years after the suspension, the Corps Masovia decided to renovate and take care of the grave of the Dewischeit couple. Alfred Färber ( Corps Littuania ) presented a “heart-teasing school memory” to Dewischeit as a person and teacher; she is missing.

Honors

In 1915 a monument was erected for him in Lötzen , a boulder with a medallion from Dewischeit. The monument was designed by the master stonemason and sculptor Bogumil Sláma from Königsberg and executed by his pupil Paul Kimritz . This monument was completely renovated in 1987 by the city of Giżycko and has been maintained since then. The name was removed and a plaque with the life data in Polish was attached to the base.

In Elck there is a Dewischeit birch with a memorial plaque.

additional

The original of the Masurian Song , pictures of Dewischeit and souvenirs were exhibited in the Fatherland Memorial Hall in Lötzen and at the Boyen Festival until they were destroyed in World War II .
