Friedrich Herlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Herlin also Friedrich Herlein (* around 1430 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber  ?; † around 1500 in Nördlingen ) was an old German painter .

Life

Herlin worked in Rothenburg ob der Tauber , lived in Nördlingen from 1459 , received citizenship in Nördlingen in 1467 and died there around 1500. Herlin was the father-in-law of the influential Ulm painter Bartholomäus Zeitblom . An inscription on the former wings of the high altar of St. George's Church in Nördlingen indicates that Herlin came from Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The family name in Rothenburg can be traced back to the first half of the 15th century.

Works

His certified main works (mostly with carved shrine figures by other artists) can be found in Rothenburg ob der Tauber , Bopfingen and Nördlingen.

  • the wings of the high altar in the Jakobskirche in Rothenburg ob der Tauber with depictions from the life of Mary (1466),
  • two altar wings ( Herlin altar ) with the birth of Christ and the Adoration of the Magi in the town church of St. Blasius in Bopfingen (1472)
  • three altar wings with the birth of Christ , the adoration of the kings and the presentation of Jesus in the temple in the St. Bonifatius Church in Emmendingen (1473)
  • the triptych donated by Herlin with the Madonna, St. Georg (the Nördlingen church patron), St. Lukas, St. Margaret and the portraits of the donor family in the town church of Nördlingen. The panels show: Annunciation of the Lord to Mary , Visitation of Mary , Birth of Jesus , Circumcision of Jesus , Adoration of the Child by the Kings , Presentation of Jesus in the Temple , Flight into Egypt and The Twelve Year Old Jesus in the Temple . The prophet Isaiah and John the Baptist are depicted on the side walls of the altar.

Art-historical classification

The apostle Peter with medieval glasses reading in Rothenburg 1466, painted by Friedrich Herlin

Herlin shows himself to be the successor to Rogier van der Weyden , from whom he probably learned and whose style he taught the Upper Germans, without, however, arriving at an independent way of expression. Herlin stands at the transition from the medieval gold base representations to a new realistic representation method that originated from Dutch painting.

Interesting for art and cultural history, but amusing for the observer, is the apostle Peter , who reads with glasses .
