biography

Friedrich Leo von Rottenberger was the son of a judge. He trained in the kk palace gardeners, first in Moravia, and from 1892 at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna as a gardening assistant. From the turn of the century he worked in the gardening department and soon became head of the office.

In 1918, at the end of the First World War, Friedrich Leo von Rottenberger became court garden director, in 1919 court garden administrator and director. The court gardens of the Habsburg residences and facilities became the property of the Republic of Austria and in 1921 Rottenberger became director of the Federal Gardens department , which was subordinated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry - at the time under Haueis and Hennet . During his period of service, the complex restoration of the gardens, which had been neglected after the war, fell. He made particular merits with the expansion of the important plant collections in Schönbrunn and the expansion of the Belvedere Gardens , which was started in 1569 by Emperor Maximilian II . In Rothenberger's time, the plant collection became the second largest in Europe through the exchange of seeds. This also improved the financial situation of the gardens. Rottenberger retired in 1934, followed by Franz Matschkai.

From 1922 to 1934/35 he was also the president of the Austrian Horticultural Society, where he was a co-editor of the garden newspaper .

Among his honors is the name of a rose variety, the shrub rose 'Government Councilor Rottenberger' (R. multiflora, Praskac Tulln, 1926).
