Friedrich Leonard von Soltau (* 1800 in Lübeck ; † July 15, 1846 in Halle ) was a German folk song collector and researcher.

life and work

Soltau studied German literature and oriental languages in Jena and Leipzig . His primary interest was soon the German folk song . Without a permanent degree from university, Soltau settled in Dresden . After his once wealthy family became impoverished, Soltau's financial situation became precarious. He stayed temporarily in Meißen , Leipzig , Jena and Weimar before finally settling in Halle.

Soltau's importance for the history of literature is based on the publication A Hundred German Historical Folk Songs , published in Leipzig in 1836 . It was a collection of folk songs, which clearly stood out from previous publications of this kind due to its scientific claim and its faithfulness to sources. From the estate of Soltau, Rudolf Hildebrand published German historical folk songs, second hundred , in 1856 . The Germanist Rochus von Liliencron described Soltau's collection as the basis of his later work on the subject.

Soltau's scientific estate is in the Aargau State Archives .
