Friedrich Scheffer

Friedrich Heinrich Ernst Leopold Scheffer (born December 21, 1800 in Schrecksbach ; † August 8, 1879 on Gut Engelbach near Niederaula ) was a conservative politician in the Electorate of Hesse .

Life

Scheffer was born to the pastor Karl Ludwig Scheffer and Karoline Henriette Katharine Wigand. In 1828 he married his cousin Marianne Wigand (* 1804 in Korbach ; † 1880 at Gut Engelbach).

After attending the Old State School in Korbach and the Old Monastery School in Hersfeld , Scheffer studied law in Marburg from 1819 to 1822 . Then he settled as a lawyer in Treysa . In 1834 he was appointed a judicial officer at the Schwarzenfels Justice Office, in 1836 as a senior judge in Kassel and in 1838 as a councilor there. After he had become a lecturer in the Interior Ministry of the Electorate of Hesse in 1841 , then Ministerialrat , he moved into the State Ministry in the same year , where he was a consultant in 1846. From 1846 he held the title of "Council of State". From September 1847 to March 1848 he served as a provisional director of the Ministry of the Interior. In March 1848 he had to flee from Kassel as a result of the revolution . In 1849 he bought the Engelbach estate. In 1850 he returned to Kassel with the penal Bavarians . From September 1855 he was again a member of the State Ministry. From February 1856 to May 1859 he was the successor of Ludwig Hassenpflug as Minister of the Interior and Head of Government of Hesse. In 1862 he founded the Hessen Association .

Scheffer was a member of the Hessian Estates Assembly from 1833 to 1838 as a member of the cities of the Schwalm district . From 1852 to 1854 he was a member of the Second Chamber. He also exercised from the third to the sixth (1836-1846) and at the ninth Landtag (1855-1857) the office of Landtag commissioner .

Scheffer, who was initially liberal , was soon considered to be an extremely conservative politician, who was also nicknamed " Flail from the Schwalm" because of his drastic statements .
