Friedrich Siebenrock (born January 20, 1853 in Schörfling am Attersee ; † January 28, 1925 there ) was an Austrian zoologist .

Life

The father, Jakob Siebenrock (* 1805 in Sigmaringen) was a surgeon and mayor of Schörfling.

Friedrich Siebenrock first grew up in his place of birth. He attended high schools in Salzburg and Hall in Tirol . After graduating from high school , he studied zoology at the University of Innsbruck and the University of Vienna . He was active in the Corps Rhaetia (1875) and in the Corps Saxonia Vienna (1886). Towards the end of his studies he worked for a long time as a demonstrator at the University's Zootomic Institute.

After completing his studies, Siebenrock became a volunteer at the Natural History Museum in Vienna in January 1886 . He spent his entire professional life there, most recently as curator . In 1895 and 1897 he accompanied the director of the zoological department, Franz Steindachner , on the first and second Austrian expeditions to the Red Sea. The main scientific interest of Siebenrock was next to the crocodiles , especially the turtles . With the latter, he made a name for himself through numerous initial scientific descriptions . His "world-famous" turtle collection is part of the amphibian and reptile collection of the NHM.

Honors

For his special commitment to the museum, Siebenrock was appointed court counselor in 1920, and he was also awarded the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order and the Silver Jubilee Court Medal.
