Friedrich St. Florian
Friedrich St. Florian (* 1932 in Graz ) is an Austrian- American architect .
biography
Friedrich St. Florian graduated from the Technical University of Graz with a degree in architecture, which he completed in 1960. He received a Fulbright Scholarship and graduated from Columbia University in New York with a Master of Science degree in urban planning . After a year of teaching at Columbia University, he became a faculty member of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1963 . During his years as a professor at RISD, he was dean of the architecture and design department, university director and responsible critic of the European Honors Program in Rome. He also taught at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London; the MIT in Cambridge, McGill University in Montreal and the University of Texas at Austin .
In addition to his teaching activities, he had been a practicing architect since 1974. He received worldwide recognition for his design of the Second World War Memorial in Washington, DC, which was inaugurated in 2004. He worked as a design architect on the team at the Providence Place Mall , a retail and entertainment center in downtown Providence and the largest construction project ever carried out in Rhode Island. He was also the architect of the Providence Skybridge , which connects the mall to the Westin Hotel .
His drawings are included in many private collections as well as in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the MIT, the RISD Museum and the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris. He is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards from national and international design competitions, including second place in the Georges Pompidou Center competition in Paris. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. In 2005 he was made an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Rhode Island College.
