Friedrich Ulrich Freiherr von Knigge (born September 11, 1618 in Leveste , † October 15, 1683 in Bredenbeck ) was an imperial colonel on horseback, an imperial Austrian colonel and chamberlain in Cologne .

Life

Friedrich Ulrich was the son of Jobst von Knigge (1572–1626) and Hippolyta von Oberg († 1657) and is considered the progenitor of the barons of Knigge.

He was in the service of the Elector of Cologne as chamberlain and owned several estates, including in Bredenbeck , Pattensen and Hanover . In the spring of 1659, he and his family moved from Braunschweig to the county of Mansfeld, which was under Electoral Saxon sequestration . Here he entered into the existing lease agreement for Arnstein Castle between the Counts of Mansfeld and Hans Wilhelm von Könitz (1623–1662) , which still had a term of three years. The annual rent was 225 thalers. Since the end of the lease was in sight , Knigge bought on February 5, 1661 in Ulm from the community of heirs of Katzbeck 8/12 of the Arnstein office . When the lease expired in the spring of 1662, Count Johann Georg von Mansfeld asked Knigge to vacate Arnstein Castle because he wanted to use it himself. Knigge and his wife resisted. After a lengthy legal battle, the Knigges did not vacate Arnstein Castle until 1664. According to the Mansfeld Counts, they left it in a devastated state.

After lengthy disputes, von Knigge, with consensus from Elector Johann Georg II of Saxony, confirmed on August 2, 1670 as the sole owner of the Arnstein office. After his death in 1683, his sons shared the office of Arnstein. The Brandenburg governor Georg Ernst Freiherr von Knigge received one half as his seat in Endorf, while the Kurland Oberhofmarschall Maximilian Friedrich Casimir Freiherr von Knigge received the other half with the three works Friedrichsrode, Willerode and Pfersdorf. The three other brothers received the Hanoverian goods.

Friedrich Ulrich was active as a Saxon war councilor in the Turkish wars , but also in Italy, Hungary, Spain and the Netherlands, and distinguished himself in the wars. On June 19, 1665, Emperor Leopold I gave Knigge and his older brother Jobst Hilmar von Knigge the status of baron for the empire and the hereditary lands .

In 1657 he built the oil mill , Obermühle, in Bredenbeck.

In his first marriage he was childless with Elisabeth von Ditfurth (1622–1646), daughter of Anton von Ditfurth .

He was married from 1649 in second marriage to Susanna Maria von Rothleben (1628–1683). From this marriage u. a. the sons Georg Ernst Freiherr von Knigge and Maximilian Friedrich Casimir von Knigge emerged.

He is the great-great-grandfather of Adolph Freiherr Knigge .
