Friedrich Wassipaul

Friedrich Wassipaul (* March 5, 1926 ; † May 21, 2014 ) was an Austrian wood researcher, university professor and long-time director of the Institute for Wood Research at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU).

Life

Friedrich Wassipaul was born on March 5, 1926 and learned the trade of Wagner in his parents' company in Hollabrunn . He then began studying mechanical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology , combining craftsmanship with academic knowledge of wood and its processing. After completing his studies and internship at a Danish wood industry, Wassipaul began his work at the newly founded Austrian Wood Research Institute, now known as Holzforschung Austria . There he became department head in 1966 and also taught at the HTBLuVA Mödling in the higher department for wood technology. In 1971 and 1972, he was appointed full professor at the Institute for Wood Research at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). In the winter semester 1975/75, Wassipaul was the founder of the wood management branch and, until his retirement in 1992, shaped the structure of teaching and research at the Institute for Wood Research , of which he was the long-term director. After his retirement, Helmuth Resch filled the vacant position.

He was also a member of various standards committees and test commissions of quality associations in the timber industry. He has also published countless publications in specialist journals and other media. Wassipaul has been honored many times throughout his life, including the Pro Universitate Soproniensis medal from the West Hungarian University in Sopron and was an honorary member of the Austrian Glue Association and a member of the International Wood Science and Technology Society. For his committed work, he was awarded the badge of honor by the Association of Timber Farmers Austria (VHÖ) in 2000. In November 2001, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, the first volume was published - with the title Eine Holzzeitgeschichte - Contours of Research and Teaching in Austria - from the Lignovisionen series , which was published at the Institute for Wood Research , Department for Materials Science and Process Technology , at the University of Bodenkultur Wien is published.

Wassipaul died on May 21, 2014 at the age of 88 and was buried on June 4, 2014 in the family grave at Hollabrunn cemetery.
