Life

After training as a craftsman and after completing military service , von Frihling studied at the State Art School in Hamburg from 1945 to 1948 , a. a. with Professors Alfred Mahlau and Karl Kaschak . From 1957 a semester followed with Gerhard Fietz at the same university. From 1958 to 1968 von Frihling ran a state-recognized art school in Hamburg and on the Dutch island of Terschelling .

Self-portrait, pencil, 1946

From 1951 to 1958, von Frihling undertook study trips which he a. a. led to Holland , France , Italy and Switzerland . From around 1980, after a trip to Greece , he created many mostly small-format works as gouache pictures on gold, silver and copper backgrounds. His works have received several awards. His home town of Hamburg, to which he felt closely connected, remained his permanent place of residence throughout his life.

Memberships

Pit von Frihling had been a member of the professional association of visual artists , Hamburg section , since 1968 . In addition, he was a member of the Freemason Lodge Roland in Hamburg for over 40 years ; the lodge shows works by her brother von Frihling on its homepage.

plant

Pit von Frihlings work includes thousands of sketches, watercolors, paintings and works for churches. He was a "landscaper, but not at all in the sense of the lovable little masters of the late 19th century". The diverse artistic spectrum includes abstract and figurative works as well as works with sand and metal . He “doesn't work in front of the motive. The pictures are only created in the quiet of the studio ”.

collaboration

In the years from 1958 to 1968 there was a fruitful collaboration with the Evangelical Church , for which he took on the artistic design of 20 modern churches. In addition, von Frihling created works of art in public spaces or as contributions to art in public buildings “in wood, metal, glass, textile”. In 1975 he worked on the film Views - German Landscape Painting from Dürer to Today , which was produced on behalf of the Federal Press Office in Bonn .

In his youth, von Frihling created pictures in conventional oil painting; the first pencil sketches, such as self-portraits , have also survived from this period . Pit von Frihling's main work is all about the North German and Dutch landscape, but it was less important to him to create the image of a certain landscape. Rather, he devoted himself to the typical geological nature of his subject and incorporated light and its formative power into the composition. The artist appears as a “landscape painter who predominantly gains new aspects from North German motifs such as sea , mud flats , sky and coasts ” and who “ultimately only shows the image of his idea from the world of the spiritual”.

Here he penetrates "in his pictures into the depths, he feels geological , morphological , ascends into the sphere of the meteorological ", whereby he is particularly fascinated by "primeval landscapes, the sea, the moors , large forests and the high mountains ". Pit von Frihling shows in his landscapes “a strong emotional side” which corresponds to a “tendency towards the mystical in a positive sense”. As a rule, the human being does not appear as an object in the picture , "there is no need to depict human beings where everything is intended for human beings".

Working for churches

His antependia as a fabric application for altars and pulpits in churches also occupy a separate area in his work. In addition, he created models for crosses , tower crowns, altar dishes ( chalices or evening supper plates ) and candlesticks as well as for lights in churches, which - together with his drawings - served as designs for the craftsmen who carried out the work . An overview of this part of his work is still missing.
