Friedrich Wilhelm Gribel (born June 30, 1785 in Stettin ; † August 10, 1846 there ) was a German shipowner and businessman.

Life

Friedrich Wilhelm Gribel was the sixth of eight children of the Szczecin merchant and ship owner Rudolf Christian Gribel (1747–1831) and his wife Eleonore Margarete Georgi. After attending school, he completed a commercial apprenticeship at the Rud trading company . Christian. Gribel of his father. He may then have stayed in Spain for some time . After he became a member of the sailing guild and a citizen of the French colony in Szczecin, his father made him a partner in 1805.

During the French period , the Szczecin sea trade largely came to a standstill because of the continental blockade. Like all merchants, the Gribel company had to pay high contributions to the occupying power. When the city did not immediately make a payment imposed by the French in 1813, several merchants, including Friedrich Wilhelm Gribel, were imprisoned for several days.

After the Wars of Liberation , he and his father managed to rebuild the company. In 1817 they took part in the re-establishment of the “Pomeranian Provincial Zuckersiederei”, of which Friedrich Wilhelm Gribel became the second director. He played a decisive role in making the sugar boiler the most important factory in Szczecin. He used the ships of his shipping company to collect cane sugar ( raw sugar ) from the West Indies as a raw material for processing . However, his plans for the establishment of a West Indian trade company, which was also to trade with South American states, failed due to the resistance of the Prussian Ministry.

Friedrich Wilhelm Gribel was a member of the city council of Szczecin from 1819 to 1823. In 1825 he was one of the founders of the "Prussian Sea and Assekuranz-Compagnie" in Stettin. From 1832 to 1837 he was a board member of the corporation of merchants. In this function he was a member of the Railway Committee that prepared the construction of the Berlin-Szczecin Railway primarily financially. In 1840 he was awarded the title of Commerzienrat . The "Prussian National Insurance Company" (renamed "National" Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG in 1919, since 1930 interest group with Colonia Versicherung AG with cross-shareholding) was co-founded in 1845 by him. His successor in the company was Gottlieb Theodor Gribel (* 1823), who completely converted the trading company into a shipping company.

family

Friedrich Wilhelm Gribel was married to Friederike Wilhelmine Sperling (1788–1847), the daughter of the estate manager Paul Ferdinand Sperling, later owner of Gut Buslar A in the Pyritz district, at the end of 1805 . The two had fifteen children, of whom six sons and three daughters survived their father.
