Friedrich Zschokke (born May 27, 1860 in Aarau , † January 10, 1936 in Basel ) was a Swiss zoologist .

Life

He was the son of the engineer Olivier Zschokke and the grandson of the writer Heinrich Zschokke .

Friedrich Zschokke was professor of zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of Basel from 1893 to 1931. He was the teacher of Adolf Portmann and was friends with Fridtjof Nansen . He mainly researched animal geography and small animals in water. He had a strong bond with his students and led many research excursions, especially in the mountains. With a donation in 1936 he enabled the construction of the Zschokke House on the Gerschnialp above Engelberg , which to this day belongs to the student body of the University of Basel and is primarily used for storage and project weeks.

Friedrich Zschokke was a member of the Swiss Zofinger Association . In 1892 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . 1910/1911 he was President of the German Zoological Society . Since 1930 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . The Academic Alpine Club Basel has made Zschokke an honorary member.
