Life

Blanckenburg received military training in Berlin . From there, the Jung-Krockow Dragoon Regiment initially took him into service. With the rank of ensign , Blanckenburg experienced the end of the Seven Years' War , in which he was seriously wounded. Nevertheless, he did not say goodbye to Prussian virtue and conscientiously until 1776, now with the rank of lieutenant colonel , when he renounced supply or civilian employment.

Blanckenburg already dealt with literary history during his active service. His best-known work, the experiment on the novel , appeared as early as 1774 . Only after leaving the military did he settle down as a freelance writer in Leipzig, where he found his sphere of activity and center of life from then on.

Christoph Martin Wieland wrote about him:

“Blankenburg in Leipzig is one of the most excellent people he has ever met. For his sake he wishes to be able to live in Leipzig. He still had the loyauté of an old Prussian officer, the unvarnished attacks on women that were so peculiar to the old Prussian warriors, and an all-encompassing, excellently digested erudition. "

Christian Felix Weisse also belonged to Blanckenburg's close circle of friends .
