Friedrich Wilhelm von Hagen (born October 25, 1801 in Ilsenburg ; † August 24, 1880 in Wernigerode ) was a German forester in the Harz region .

Life

Friedrich von Hagen was the fourth son of the Count's Chief Forester zu Stollberg Friedrich Wilhelm von Hagen and his second wife Christiane Charlotte, nee. Hardegen. His younger brother was Otto von Hagen .

From 1814 to 1820 he attended the Lyceum in Wernigerode. He then studied law in Göttingen at the request of his father . From 1824 to 1825 he was in the first stage of his legal training after studying higher regional court - auscultator at the royal district and city court of Quedlinburg . In mid-1827 he became Chamber Secretary of Count Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode . In 1832 he was promoted to chamber assessor. In 1833 he became a real member of the Chamber and thus received a vote in the Count's Chamber in Wernigerode . After a further five years he was appointed to the Count of Stolberg Chamber Council . During this time he gained a wide range of experience in forestry, so that after the death of the Count's Chief Forester Christian Ludwig Hartmann von Landwüst on June 4, 1845, he took over the supervision and management of all forestry businesses in the Wernigeröder ( Province of Saxony ) and Hohnsteinschen Forest ( Kingdom of Hanover ) received the title of Forest Council . After almost ten years of successful activity, he was appointed head forester on April 23, 1855 .

Around 1852/1853 von Hagen carried out a large number of Brocken climbs and developed the thesis that the Brockenspitze was never forested, and attributes this to the storm effects and ice breakage. He published an article on this in 1853.

Friedrich von Hagen was retired on April 1, 1875 at his own request. Before that, he was made an honorary member of the Count's Chamber, which gave him the opportunity to continue participating in the meetings of the Chamber College. Von Hagen spent his retirement in Ilsenburg.

Appreciation

Count Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode determined on August 1, 1874 for the 50th anniversary of von Hagen's service:

"To commemorate the upcoming celebration of the 50th anniversary of the service of Ober-Forester von Hagen on the 3rd of the month, I decide that from the intended day the road leading from here to Schierke will start from the point where it joins the road Thumkuhlenthals flows until Schierke is supposed to be called "Hagen-Straße". As a permanent reminder of this designation and the celebration that prompted it, I also determine that a memorial stone with a corresponding inscription should be erected at a suitable point on Hagen-Strasse. "

The mentioned monument, an approx. 1.5 meter high boulder with an inscription, was erected on the western edge of the road, about 2 kilometers after the exit of Hasserode , where it is still located today. This is how the connecting road between Wernigerode and Schierke bears his name.
