Friedrich von Hessen-Darmstadt (born September 18, 1677 in Darmstadt , † October 13, 1708 in Tschaussy ) was a prince of Hessen-Darmstadt and Russian lieutenant general .

Life

Friedrich was the youngest son of Landgrave Ludwig VI. von Hessen-Darmstadt (1630–1678) from his marriage to Elisabeth Dorothea von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (1640–1709), daughter of Ernst I von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg .

In Rome in 1697, like his brothers Georg , Philipp and Heinrich , Friedrich converted to the Catholic faith in protest of his mother, a zealous Protestant , and was initially canon in Breslau and Cologne .

He later entered the Russian service and was appointed lieutenant general of the cavalry by Peter the Great in 1707 . In the battle of Lesnaja against Sweden, which was victorious for Peter on September 9, 1708, Friedrich was so badly wounded that he died shortly afterwards. Friedrich had contributed significantly to the victory in the battle. Tsar Peter only allowed the completion of a Catholic church in order to be able to bury his general in it.

Friedrich had married Petronella von Stockmanns (1677–1751) on November 20, 1704 in Mariazell . The marriage with the daughter of Baron von Stockmanns-Detting, who was born in Brussels , was not considered befitting.
