Friedrich von Sachsen-Altenburg (1801–1870)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Joseph Ludwig Georg of Saxony-Altenburg (* October 4, 1801 in Hildburghausen ; † July 1, 1870 in Altenburg ) was Prince of Saxony-Hildburghausen , from 1826 Prince of Saxony-Altenburg .

origin

Friedrich comes from the house of the dukes of Saxony-Hildburghausen , an Ernestine branch of the Wettins . Hildburghausen was chosen as their residence in 1680 and the country was so financially run down over the next four generations that an imperial debit commission had to be formed in 1769 to examine the claims of creditors and to regulate income and expenditure.

Life

Friedrich was a son of Duke Friedrich von Sachsen-Hildburghausen (since 1826 Duke of Sachsen-Altenburg) and his wife Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1769-1818), daughter of Duke Karl II. Von Mecklenburg-Strelitz . To distinguish himself from his father of the same name, he was often called the younger . He was the brother of Dukes Joseph and Georg von Sachsen-Altenburg and Queen Therese of Bavaria , with whom he was raised. From 1816 he was educated with his brother Eduard at the Fellenberg Institute in Hofwil , Switzerland.

On June 25, 1834, Friedrich got engaged in London to Lady Maria Alathea Beatrice Talbot (1815-1858), daughter of John Talbot, 15th Earl of Shrewsbury . The ceremony was organized by Queen Adelaide , who like Friedrich also came from southern Thuringia, in the presence of numerous members of the European nobility. Ludwig I of Bavaria , the bridegroom's brother-in-law, elevated the Catholic Lady Maria Alathea to the rank of prince with the title “ Highness ” as “Princess of Bavaria”. However, the marriage did not take place. Friedrich remained unmarried and Mary Talbot married Prince Filippo Andrea Doria -Pamfili-Landi (1813–1876) in 1839 .

After the ducal court moved from Hildburghausen to Altenburg in 1826, Friedrich stayed with his brother Georg and his sister Charlotte , who lived separately from her husband, in Hildburghausen until 1849, where he lived in the so-called Bechmannschen Haus in Hildburghausen, and then moved to the area Hummelshain Castle . Although appointed captain in 1826, the prince remained a private man who devoted himself to poor relief. Friedrich is buried in the Altenburg royal crypt.
