Hans-Jürgen Salier (born April 2, 1944 in Hildburghausen ) is a German educator , philatelist , local history researcher, author and publisher.

Life and work

Salier was born as a half-orphan in the former building of the Masonic Lodge "Karl zum Rautenkranz" in Hildburghausen. He studied from 1960 to 1962 at the Institute for Teacher Training in Meiningen (qualification as a lower level teacher ) and from 1966 to 1977 at the Erfurt / Mühlhausen University of Education (distance learning / qualification as a certified teacher for German language and literature). Until 1987 Salier worked as a teacher at the Central High School, the later "Joseph Meyer High School" in Hildburghausen and in adult education. In 1987 he became a book editor at transpress VEB Verlag für Verkehrwesen Berlin, specializing in philately , numismatics and communications . In 1990 he founded the publishing house Frankenschwelle Hans J. Salier, which from 1995 operated as Verlag Frankenschwelle KG or Offizin Hildburghausen GmbH & Co. Verlag Frankenschwelle KG. Since 1993 he has also worked as an employee at Druckhaus Offizin Hildburghausen GmbH. In 2002 he also became head of the Augsburg-based Hofmann Verlag (medical specialist publisher). Hans-Jürgen Salier's publishing activities have been continued since 2006 by his son Bastian Salier under the name Salier Verlag Leipzig and Hildburghausen. Hans-Jürgen Salier is married and has two sons.

Philately and Postal History

Salier has been one of the best-known and most successful philatelists in the GDR since the 1960s. He held various functions in the Philatelist Association in the Kulturbund of the GDR , founded and headed the working group "Postal History Thuringia" in 1976 and was a member of the central board of the Philatelist Association. From 1987 to 1990 he was chairman of the central management of the working group postal history of the GDR. He edited two series on this topic, wrote numerous publications and articles in daily newspapers and the specialist press. He was a member of the editorial board of the specialist magazine “sammler express”. Between 1975 and 1988 he received numerous gold medals and grand prizes for his aerophilatelic and postal history collections at national and international exhibitions. His collections have been shown at five world stamp exhibitions and have been awarded great silver and silver medals: Venice, 1976; Toronto, 1978; Sofia, 1979; Vienna, 1981, Toronto, 1987. From 1987 to 1990 he worked as a lecturer at transpress VEB Verlag für Verkehrwesen Berlin and was responsible for the philately, numismatics and communications department. Hans-Jürgen Salier is also the discoverer of the Hutten letters , which were thought to be lost until 1988. These are expedition reports that the Welser conquistador and explorer Philipp von Hutten sent from Venezuela to Europe during his search for El Dorado. They are considered to be the oldest surviving letters that were sent from the "New World". After an initial scientific evaluation of the letters by the historian Eberhard Schmitt , Hans-Jürgen Salier published his book "The Gold of the New World".

Local history

In his publishing house Frankenschwelle, founded in 1990, Salier mainly edited publications on local history on the region of Thuringia and Franconia as well as books on contemporary history (GDR) and the history of technology. Until 2006 Salier was involved in the editing, editing and design of around 250 books and brochures.

Political activity

Salier became a member of the LDPD and the New Forum in November 1989 . He was a member of the citizens' committee for the dissolution of the Hildburghausen district office of the Ministry for State Security and the round table for the Hildburghausen district. From 1990 he was a member of the Hildburghausen district council for the FDP, from 1994 chairman of the district council committee for culture, education and sport and at times a member of the administrative board of the Kreissparkasse Hildburghausen as well as a member of the supervisory board of Henneberg-Kliniken GmbH . He was active in various citizens' initiatives and associations, for which he was awarded the District Administrator's Medal of Honor for Special Services for the Hildburghausen District in 2014. In the same year, the Prime Minister of the Free State of Thuringia, Christine Lieberknecht, honored him for his work during the Peaceful Revolution of 1989/90.
