Frieling-Verlag Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Frieling-Verlag Berlin is a German cost Verlag , based in Berlin , which to a lesser extent than publishing occurs.

Company history

On February 28, 1983, Wilhelm Ruprecht Frieling founded Frieling & Partner GmbH , which since 1987 has been disseminating its offer as a self- publishing house with the brochure Autor sucht Verleger .

At the end of 2002 the company was handed over to Johann-Friedrich Huffmann . At the end of 2004 , the company changed its name to Frieling & Huffmann GmbH and appears on the one hand as Frieling-Verlag Berlin and its HuffmannBusiness publications brand . In the same year the publishing house moved to the listed Goerz-Höfe in the Berlin district of Friedenau . In 2012 it was converted into a GmbH & Co. KG , Frieling & Huffmann GmbH & Co. KG .

According to its own information, after 30 years of existence, the company can look back on "more than 3000 moving book titles".

The publisher is a member of the German Book Trade Association .

Business model

The Frieling-Verlag Berlin offers a vanity press to publish book titles without restriction as to species and quality, to create them all the costs of the order-giving authors must be taken. In addition to printing, there are costs for editing , marketing , sales as well as press and public relations work for the publication of the books. Only if a first edition were to be sold in full would any subsequent editions be free of charge for the client - however, since the authors of such print products are mostly non-professional " vanity publishers ", this rarely occurs.

As with other companies of this type, authors bear the entire economic risk of the first edition for their self-publications . For this purpose, books are also published for which traditional publishers would not assume the risk of printing due to the expected inadequate sales proceeds. And according to an observation by Matthias Biskupek , the Frieling-Verlag Berlin is “ not noticed by serious reviewers ” in the case of critical book reviews due to many publications “bought by hobby poets” and “own understanding of law ”. And at least the managing director Johann-Friedrich Huffmann admitted on his own initiative in an interview (2005): “But if someone says he's only writing the book because he wants to land a bestseller , or mainly because of that, then I'll tell him that we're less predestined for it, and I'll send him away. ”And although the costs for a Frieling basic package demand at least 4000 euros from the authors (as of 2005) , the costs for the company's services often add up can add up several 10,000 euros.

Since 2005, part of the marketing concept has also been the organization of writing competitions, primarily for one's own target group. Including, so far, a unique writing competition in cooperation with the German Multiple Sclerosis Society on the subject of coping with illness through writing, as well as an annual writing competition called the Berlin-Brandenburg Contemporary Witness Prize. Although the main prize is only a bronze sculpture and two other prizes are vouchers for contributions in the anthologies subsequently published by Frieling-Verlag Berlin , the company has repeatedly given well-known federal and state politicians as laudators, jury members or patrons as well as recognized institutions such as the Allied Museum , the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin and the Tagesspiegel as cooperation and media partners.

In addition to the vast majority of self-publications by lay authors, the company also published titles by some well-known authors such as Kurt Ihlenfeld , Wilhelm Nordemann , Rolf von Sydow , Fritz Pawelzik or the designer Erich John , which included the term "Verlag" within its word mark Frieling-Verlag Berlin should justify. With this word mark, however, misleading at the same time to advertise the primary business as a cost publisher and not to mention any specific figures for cost estimates on the company's website and thus not create transparency in the sense of comparability, this business model gives the appearance of a " pseudo-publisher ".
